Phoebe's Poetry

"Poetry is the art of uniting pleasure with truth."

-Samuel Johnson, lexicographer (1709-1784)

Non-Believer

I climb on the bus,
bump into the woman
bending over in the entrance,
her oversize orange overcoat
flaps back like wings,
though I don't believe in that.
Her long brown hair tied back
like an apparition of Cindy
who's been lowered in the ground
though I don't believe in that.
But Cindy would be
an odd orange vision
just like this woman,
though the rummaging in bags
blocking the entrance
she would never do,
and I don't believe in that either.

Later I see Henry,
who never rides busses.
As I enter the elevator,
he holds the door
as he would for a friend
or someone well-known
from a previous life,
though I don't believe in that,
and he tells me it's ok,
though he never would,
and I feel comforted
though I don't believe in that.
